What changes for flyers
Not much yet. The first MAX 10s won't carry passengers until 2027, starting with WestJet. United has said it expects its first MAX 10 in mid to late 2027, and plans to use it on major routes with more premium seats than the jets it replaces. If you want to check what plane you're on, your airline's booking page or app lists the aircraft type for each flight.
Why it took so long
The MAX 10 was first expected around 2020. Certification slowed after the 737 MAX crisis, then over an engine anti-ice issue, and most recently a software glitch in late September that paused the process. The FAA later found that glitch was not a safety concern. Before signing off, the FAA required updates to the flight-control system, including the enhanced angle-of-attack sensor, in line with the 2020 safety law and NTSB recommendations.
