How we track trends
Every time we publish a trend, we log the date and the topic. Later, we look up the daily Wikipedia pageviews for the matching article and check whether our story went up before, on or after public interest peaked. That gives us an honest record of the trends we caught early and the ones we caught late. We count the misses as well as the hits.
We use Wikipedia pageviews because they are public and anyone can check them. They are one measure of interest, not the only one, so treat them as a guide rather than a full picture.
