Long before the wardrobe, there was a lion. Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew goes back to the very start of Narnia, and the first trailer just had the whole internet humming Stairway to Heaven. Here's when you can see it, how to get ready, and the reading order debate settled in one table.

๐ The date, and why it moved
Narnia was originally a Thanksgiving 2026 release. On May 1, 2026, Netflix moved it to February 12, 2027 for a wide, global theatrical release, with IMAX-only sneak previews from February 10. It's Netflix's first movie to get a global theatrical release, and it lands on Netflix itself on April 2, 2027.
Fun timing: opening weekend is also Super Bowl weekend. Super Bowl LXI is Sunday, Feb 14, 2027, which is Valentine's Day too. Big weekend for group chats.
๐ฌ The trailer
The first trailer dropped Tuesday, October 13, 2026, after Gerwig showed it at a New York preview event hosted with Stephen Colbert. It's set to Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, which Netflix says the band had never licensed for a trailer before. Highlights: Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew, Emma Mackey's Jadis, Fledge the flying horse, and Aslan, voiced by Meryl Streep, singing Narnia into being. Netflix's Tudum feature with new photos followed on October 15.

๐บ Catch up before February
Only three Narnia books have been made into films before. Story order and release order are the same for these. US trackers list all three on Disney+, but streaming deals move, so check before movie night.
| # | Film | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) | Disney+ |
| 2 | The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) | Disney+ |
| 3 | The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) | Disney+ |
There's also the BBC's 1988 to 1990 TV adaptation, if you want the full retro experience.
๐ Reading order: story vs publication
The big debate. Netflix lists the series in story order, starting with The Magician's Nephew. Lewis actually published it sixth, in 1955. Either order works. Story order follows Narnia from creation to the end; publication order lets you meet Narnia through the wardrobe first, like the original readers did.
| # | Story order | Publication order |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Magician's Nephew (1955) | The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) |
| 2 | The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) | Prince Caspian (1951) |
| 3 | The Horse and His Boy (1954) | The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) |
| 4 | Prince Caspian (1951) | The Silver Chair (1953) |
| 5 | The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) | The Horse and His Boy (1954) |
| 6 | The Silver Chair (1953) | The Magician's Nephew (1955) |
| 7 | The Last Battle (1956) | The Last Battle (1956) |
Going to see the movie? The Magician's Nephew is a short read, and it's the one the film adapts.
Still unconfirmed

- MPA rating and runtime
