From Yorkshire to the Royal Shakespeare Company
Stewart was born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, in 1940 and grew up in a working-class household. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, where he spent years in classical roles. For most of his first two decades as an actor he was a stage performer first, with television and film work on the side.
That background is why so many tributes focus on his voice and his discipline. The Guardian called him a titan of stage and screen, renowned for both Shakespeare and sci-fi, which is a rare pairing.
Captain Picard and a late, global fame
In 1987, at 47, Stewart was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series ran for seven seasons, to 1994, and was followed by four feature films, from Generations (1994) to Nemesis (2002). He returned to the role two decades later in Star Trek: Picard, which ran for three seasons from 2020 to 2023. Picard's calm authority, shaped by his stage work, made the character one of the most quoted in science fiction.

Professor X
A second franchise followed in 2000, when Stewart played Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men. He played the role across the original film series and in Logan (2017), widely seen as his farewell to it, then made a surprise return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Marvel Studios was among those who posted tributes, AP reported.
Back on stage, and a friendship with Ian McKellen
Stewart never left the theatre. He played Macbeth and Shylock, toured a one-man A Christmas Carol, and starred with Ian McKellen in Waiting for Godot in London and on Broadway. The two had played rivals Professor X and Magneto on screen and were close friends off it. McKellen led the tributes, calling Stewart "the most respected and beloved actor of his generation," the BBC reported. William Shatner and Hugh Jackman also paid tribute, per AP.
Beyond acting
He was knighted in 2010 for services to drama. He also published a memoir, Making It So, in 2023.
How to rewatch
Streaming rights change by country. In the US, the Star Trek series are generally on Paramount+, and the X-Men films move between services. Check a guide such as JustWatch for your region before you pay for anything.
Why it's trending
Few actors are central to two franchises at once. The news broke on Thursday, Oct 29, and tributes have run all week, from theatre colleagues, co-stars and studios to fans sharing their favourite Picard scenes.
