The quick version
Kenya has confirmed seven cases of Bundibugyo virus disease, a type of Ebola, including one death, as of October 17, 2026. Every case links back to one traveler who came from DR Congo, and the four newest were all found among people already in quarantine. Kenya's Ministry of Health says there's no evidence of community transmission and the risk to the public is low. The much larger outbreak is in DR Congo, with 9,277 confirmed cases and 4,478 deaths reported by October 15, per ECDC.

How Ebola spreads (and how it doesn't)
Kenyan health officials and the CDC say the virus spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of someone who is sick or has died of the disease, or with soiled items like bedding. It is not airborne, and Kenya's infection-control lead says it doesn't spread from people who have no symptoms. Early signs (fever, tiredness, aches, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea) look a lot like malaria or flu, and officials stress that with Bundibugyo, bleeding may not happen at all, so people shouldn't wait for it before getting checked.
What the U.S. is doing
The CDC has temporary entry rules: travelers who were in DR Congo within 21 days can't board commercial flights to the United States, and U.S. citizens and nationals coming from Uganda or South Sudan are routed through Washington Dulles, Atlanta or New York JFK for health screening and 21 days of text-message check-ins. If you were in an affected country and feel sick, isolate and call your health department before going to a clinic.
