Results so far
Projections from Ipsos/CeSID give the Student List 141 of 250 seats and Vucic's list 103, The Guardian reports; CRTA projects 134 to 106. Either way that is above the 126 needed for a majority. The Student List called it "a victory of courage over fear, of hope over indifference," per The Guardian, and EU enlargement commissioner Marta Kos said "the door to the EU is open." According to The Guardian, official final results come from the RIK.
How we got here
The protest movement began after a railway station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. Students led months of demonstrations demanding accountability, and about 150,000 people rallied in Belgrade on Thursday, Al Jazeera reports. Vucic called the snap vote in September.
What each side says
The Student List says it wants accountability and cleaner institutions after the Novi Sad disaster. Vucic denies the accusations made against him and says the students are backed from abroad, which they deny. Polls disagree: an Ipsos poll published Thursday had SNS at 47% and the Student List at 40%, while other surveys showed the students ahead, NBC News and Reuters report.
