Valkyries vs. Dream: why the 2026 WNBA Finals are a must-watch
By The Trends Incoming team ยท 2026-10-17
Somebody is about to win their first WNBA title, and either way it's going to be a great story. The Golden State Valkyries host the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals today, Saturday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. PT) on NBC and Peacock. Neither team has ever won it all.
What it is
The WNBA Finals is a best-of-seven series. Per WNBA.com, this is only the eighth time in the league's 30 years that both finalists are chasing a first championship. Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 are at Chase Center in San Francisco, Games 3 and 4 are at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, and the venue for Atlanta's Game 6, if needed, is still to be set.

Why it's trending
The Valkyries are in year two. Last season they became the first expansion team to make the playoffs, as a No. 8 seed. This season they went 32-12, finished No. 2 with the league's top-ranked defense, rallied from 16 down to win a Game 3 against Dallas, then swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Coach Natalie Nakase beat her old boss, Becky Hammon, along the way.
The Dream are on a heater. Atlanta went a franchise-best 30-14, hasn't lost a playoff game (2-0 over Washington, 3-0 over New York) and rides a 10-game winning streak. Its All-Star trio is Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard and Angel Reese, who was just named Defensive Player of the Year. Atlanta has reached the Finals three times before (2010, 2011 and 2013) and was swept each time, so this is a chance to rewrite that.
Add a big Bay Area crowd and two fan bases who've never celebrated a title, and you can see why it's all over the timeline.
What to watch
- Defense on defense. Reese won DPOY and Golden State's Gabby Williams was runner-up. The Valkyries were the league's best regular-season defense; in the playoffs, Atlanta has the top defensive rating.
- Stars vs. depth. Atlanta leaned on its starters more than any team. Golden State led the league in bench scoring, with Sixth Player of the Year Janelle Salaun.
- Allisha Gray's hand. Atlanta's leading scorer missed the last two semifinal games after a left-hand injury and a minor procedure. She called herself day-to-day this week.
- The season series. Golden State won all three regular-season meetings, but the last one was July 4, before Atlanta added two-time champion DeWanna Bonner.
