Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan's "expectations" remix: what to know
By The Trends Incoming team · 2026-10-16
Two of pop's best friends finally made a song together. Olivia Rodrigo released a remix of "expectations" featuring Chappell Roan on Thursday, October 15, and it comes with a music video so committed to the bit that David Byrne hosts a fake game show. We're obsessed.
What it is
"expectations" is the 12th track on Rodrigo's third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. That album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 first-week units, the biggest solo debut of 2026, according to the label. The new version adds Roan with a fresh verse and a playful spin on the original. It's produced by Dan Nigro, who has worked with both of them for years.
Two firsts here: it's Rodrigo's first-ever remix and Roan's first-ever feature on someone else's song.
The video
Directed by Bardia Zeinali, the video drops the two of them into "The Big Expectations Show," a retro game show built from 1980s and '90s classics. Rolling Stone says there's a campy take on Family Feud, with Talking Heads legend David Byrne as the host and Dan Nigro making a cameo. It opens with Roan saying, "Oh, Olivia does remixes now," the same clip Rodrigo teased online days earlier.
Why it's trending
Because fans have wanted this for years. Roan opened for Rodrigo on the Sour tour and again on the Guts tour, and they've shared a producer the whole time. They're also both Best New Artist Grammy winners. When a retailer briefly listed the single early, the internet did its detective thing, and Rodrigo confirmed it on Instagram on October 13. Two days of hype, then a release at 5 p.m. PT Thursday. It hasn't left the timeline since.
Where to get it
- Streaming everywhere now.
- Limited 7-inch vinyl, CDs and cassettes are on sale at both artists' online stores, per the label.
