What each side says
The government: Lecornu said police faced "violence of extreme intensity" and that "no one will impose their political agenda through violence." President Emmanuel Macron said those who looted or attacked public buildings "will be prosecuted and punished."
The opposition: National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the rioters and accused the far-left La France Insoumise of legitimising the violence. LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon backed the marches, told protesters looting was "contrary to our methods," and accused police of going too far.
What comes next
France's next presidential election is in April and May 2027, and Macron can't run again, so the protests are already part of the campaign conversation.
