The Brewers are going to the World Series. Here's why that's a big deal.

Forty-four years. That's how long Milwaukee waited. On Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, the Brewers beat the Dodgers 6-4 to finish a four-game sweep of the NLCS and punch their ticket to the World Series for the first time since 1982. If your feed is full of #ThisIsMyCrew and grown adults crying in Brewers jerseys, that's why.
What happened
Game 4 started badly for Milwaukee. Shohei Ohtani, back at the top of the Dodgers' order, hit a three-run homer, and Tyler Glasnow retired the first 10 Brewers he faced. LA led 4-0. Then the Brewers did what they did all series: they kept coming. Jake Bauers hit a two-run double in the fourth, David Hamilton's RBI single chased Glasnow in the fifth, and Garrett Mitchell's homer in the sixth put Milwaukee in front for good. Aaron Ashby closed it out.
The numbers tell the story. Per MLB.com, the Dodgers' starters, a rotation that includes Tarik Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Glasnow, combined for a 6.50 ERA in the series. The Brewers came back from a deficit again and again, and their bullpen locked the door late.
Why it's trending
Three reasons. First, the drought. Milwaukee's only World Series trip was 1982, and they've never won one. Second, the opponent. The Dodgers were two-time defending champions chasing a three-peat, which would have been the first by a National League team. Third, revenge. The Dodgers swept the Brewers in last year's postseason. Per the Elias Sports Bureau via MLB.com, the Brewers are only the second team ever to win that kind of rematch (after the 1923 Yankees) and the first to do it with a sweep. That's a storyline you don't have to explain twice.
There's also a bigger conversation riding along. The final four this year is Milwaukee, Cleveland and Tampa Bay, three of the sport's lower-payroll teams, plus the Dodgers. With baseball's labor deal set to expire after the season, people on both sides of the salary-cap debate are pointing at this October as evidence. We'll leave that argument to them.
Who they'll play
That's being settled right now. The Cleveland Guardians lead the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 in the ALCS after rookie Petey Halpin's go-ahead homer won Game 3. Game 4 is tonight in Cleveland. Either way, it's a fun matchup: Cleveland hasn't won it all since 1948, and Tampa Bay has never won a World Series.
